The winds of spring change have swept through Frozen Laundryland, carrying headquarters North a beautiful 80 Kootenay kilometres and setting us back down on the shores of the wildly enchanting, Nelson, BC.
Surrounded by the embrace of stunning mountainscapes and the sensual nuzzling of Kootenay Lake, the land sits ripe with well maintained bike trails, sandy beaches and endless opportunity, at least that's what we see.
Now, being the new kid in town can be hard, but Frozen Laundry seems to be making friends already.
We're teaming up with local weaver, painter, designer and all around delight, Branda Christofferson at Cut Threads to try and make some magic happen on the road this summer! Check her out in the Vernon Street Studios, MarketFest Nelson or online.
As well, we're pretty pumped to be setting up a studio/retail space in the basement of Nelson's Old Jam Factory, on the famous Jam Factory Lane.
Vortex Studios is the brainchild of local musician, artist, thinker, Scott Milne, who is aspiring to establish an inspiring and welcoming space for creators and appreciators of diverse artistic backgrounds.
To date, there are two rehearsal/recording studios, a ceramics worker, a reclaimed wood artist and great gallery space!
It's going to be great to see this space evolve!

(The studio looks a lot different these days, but maintains the sweet Kootenay charm)
Starting in May 2012, we've got a few hundred feet in the main room to call home and plan to be open 3 days a week for visits from people like you!
We'll be sure to keep the information a-comin' as we start getting settled in.
In the mean time, check back often to see our new pieces for the spring/summer collection, jerseys, shorts, shants and more - like these tough as nails mountain bike shorts, coming soon to a website near you!

Happy Shredding!
FL
Last week, Frozen Laundry gathered up a sweet shred posse of some of Rossland's finest, including local photog Vince Boothe and set out in their Skin Track Softshells to take advantage of that famous Kootenay powder on Grey Mountain!
It was the perfect shred-pportunity for some high quality product & pow testing!
We didn't see record amounts of snowfall this year (yet) but we had pretty incredible backcountry conditions all season.

For those of us lucky enough to call the Rossland Range home, we knew better than to let all this sweet pow go to waste!
Local shredster, Shannon Noonan, laying down some deep turns in her Bluebird Skin Track Softie!

Local extreme skier & Frozen Laundry team rider Matt Titheridge in his customized "Moustache Metalworks" skin track softie. FL & MOFAB teamed up on these beauty queens . . . here's what Matt had to say about his . . .
"After collaborating on some display features, I became impressed with Frozen Laundry's commitment to locally produced textiles. We wound up choosing to work with FL to custom design a run of soft shell jackets for our clients. We worked with FL to best represent Moustache Metalworks, incorporating our graphic work with available fabric, zipper and stitching colors. The feel and quality of the materials are top notch and the customer feedback has been very rewarding! From fabric selection through to graphic layout, Ali Becker patiently guided us through the process and ensured we got the look we wanted! Thanks FL!"

Here's a look at some of the graphics on MT's custom jackets.
We also did a MOFAB run for the ladies, here's what local shred superstar, Nicola Kuhn had to say about her's . . .
"Can't say enough about this versatile jacket. It takes me from the
backcountry to the streets. Worn as an everyday outer layer, this soft
shell is stylish. The soft lavender receives a ton of compliments and
the day glow green zipper adds just enough contrast
to make it a stand out feature. The pockets are big enough for gloved
hands and the hood is loose to provide a soft look.
Where this jacket really won me over was on a windy night tour. The wind
was howling and the snow was blowing in all directions. With the hood
up and the jacket fully zipped you'll be fully protected from the
elements. The generous cut around the top of the
jacket allows you to cover your chin and mouth to keep the heat in.
Even with just a thin base layer and mid layer I couldn't believe how
warm I was. The jacket falls well below the waist to keep all of you
warm. The fabric and cut allow for ample movement
while skiing and hiking."
- Nicola Kuhn

A sweet little segment of Rossland's famous, Pow Slashing Wigley, in the white room - here's what Wiggles had to say about his day in the Skin Track Softie:
"To the soul shredder that is always on the hunt for fresh lines and
untracked gnar. You do not want to leave home with out this fine piece
of product. Tested this garment the other day, and honestly it was the
best piece i've ever warn. Keeps you so
toasty warm, and wicks away water like no man's business. When your on
the top getting blasted by the wind during your switch over, you'll be
laughing at how protected you are from the elements. I love this so
much, and need this in my arsenal! Ali Becker and the Frozen Laundry crew are killing it!! Watch out!"
- Mike Wigley

Frozen Laundry's, Director of Casual Living, Cam Turnbull gets a tasty boost off the rocks! No doubt the jacket is giving him some extra distance!
MT sends a radtastical, super laid out backie. Great capture by Vince Boothe!

After a great little tour up Grey, we took to Red Mountain and hit up a lap in the Pits.
The Skin Track Sofite's are so versatile, from touring to lift riding to Rafter's Pub. They can do it all!

After a sick rip through the pits, we were ready for some brews in the bar!

Big love to the super shredding folks who came out to sport & support Frozen Laundry!
Huge thanks to Vince Boothe for his rad shots & incredible patience!
Now, get yourself a Skin Track Softie before their all gone!
Let it snow!

Nothing says, I think you're rad, like merino wool baselayers!! Designed & tested in Rossland, BC & stitched up in a lovely little studio in East Vancouver, BC using ethically sourced merino wool and lots of love!
Buy one, get one half off. You'd be crazy not to!

Woah. It's been a long time since I stepped into the old blogosphere. So much excitement and no time to write about it!
We've been steadily working away on our spring/summer 2012 line - getting all our threads in a row and sampling like mad! We're super stoked to be releasing a ladies freeride bike short this year and we wanted to give you all a little sneak peak of goodness to come!

Beauty queens! We've been working really hard to source just the right fabric for the job and we think we've nailed it down. We'll release all the goods and details in a couple of months when the line launches!
It's certainly hard to be thinking about spring as the flakes are falling but who says you can't ride your bike and slay some spring slush all in day's work?
We had the awesome opportunity this season to produce some custom softshell hoodies for a good friend and great local metalworks company, MOFAB, out of Rossland, BC. This is a quick snippet. We're going to get some wicked action shots at you real soon here!

Matt Titheridge, the man behind the moustache, is responsible for countless hours of trail building, rail welding, extreme shredding and so many other incredible contributions to the community!
We're also really stoked to have teamed up with the MuddBunnies All Female ride team out of Vancouver, BC this season to produce their Race Team jerseys. This year's design is eye catching as usual, you'll know it's a MB from a mile away!
We'll get some photos up and at cha when production is through.
Until then, let it snow!
Whew. They were a long time coming but they finally arrived! Our good friend, the Skin Track Softie.
We learned a lot this season when wading chest deep through the trials and tribulations of this project.
We had so many prototypes done up at a variety of small factories in Vancouver and it took us a really long time to find just the right people to collaborate with for production. The heavy fabric means you need heavier machinery and not just anyone has what it takes to meet our standards.
We struggled to locally source some of the notions and battled with some fit issues. However, we ironed out the wrinkles and are incredibly proud of what we've accomplished. Frozen Laundry believes firmly in always doing what is best within your means. We know we can always do better and that's what keeps us inspired to stay innovative and active in our research and development.
The toughest set back for us was finding the right fabric. We are very lucky to work with a great fabric distributor out of Vancouver and while we are sometimes limited in the textiles we have access too due to cost, high minimums or inaccessibility they always pull through.
This year, we had some recycled polyester softshell material milled up to produce our hoodies. Sadly, and of no fault of our distributors, an unfortunate series of events left us without the recycled fabric we needed when it was time to start manufacturing, so we waited. But still, it didn't arrive. So we waited some more. But alas, no fabric. When we could wait no more, it was time to make some decisions.
I spent a lot of time debating whether or not to go ahead with the project, wondering if it was a sign to wait until next season. Ultimately, the decision was made to go with the non-recycled option, which in this instance allowed us greater color options and better stretch quality in the fabric. I know this hoodie was something we wanted to provide to out customers this year and something we had really poured our hearts into.
We did a much smaller run than originally anticipated.
We have decided to make the Skin Track Softie part of a closed loop recycling project. If ever there was a time when you didn't love your Frozen Laundry softshell like you used to and you didn't have someone if your life to hand it off to, we take it back, give it to the fabric recyclers and have them break it down to re:spin it into new recycled yarns.
We know the tragic amount of polyester that sits in landfills now and we know that this is a small initiative in a world of waste. The truth is that recycled polyester takes less energy to make and creates less pollution, if we can at least reuse what we've already created, we are walking in the right direction.
With that in mind, we look forward to next year, having learned many valuable lessons from this one. We look forward to educating ourselves and others to improve that which we provide to the world around us, both good and bad.
We thank you for standing by us and supporting us during the tremendous learning curve that is life.
We wish you all the best this holiday season and hope the New Year brings you inspiration, knowledge and lots of snow!
From the crew at FL,
Let it snow!
Quite high up on my "things that anger me" list, is advertisements for female snowboarding/biking/surfing/skateboarding/etc that depict women standing around casually (usually in next to nothing) looking sexy and holding their board or bike next to them.
If you don't believe me that such a thing exists, pick up this years SBC Women's Annual and SBC Snow and start counting. Count the number of times a woman is featured in an ad riding vs standing, then do the same in the men's mag. Then again for the featured stories. Now continue on to any big brand website that has mens and ladies gear. Then come back and apologize for not believing me!
I'm just saying, that it's really not that hard to find sweet lady shredders who are more than willing to throw down for a few photos.
So, that was part of the inspiration behind last Sunday's bike park jib session/photo shoot in Rossland, BC. We put the word out to the ladies in town and a swarm of delightful folks showed up, dogs, boards, gt's and beers in tow.
The great local photog, Vince Boothe, came down armed to the teets with gear and eagerly captured our shred day in the park.

Super rad local shredster, Jess Poulin, strapped her board on for the first time this season and gave us one hell of a show! She's rocking the Motherlode merino top with the very righteous Rossland Range graphic up the arm.
The goal of the day (besides getting some great product shots to show you!) was getting the local ladies together for a laid back, early season ride in the park. It's a really great place to get creative with the lines, ride some rare features and have a good time.
It just doesn't happen often enough.

Of course, we're not here to be exclusive. The fellas are always welcome and we had some really great folks show up and help out. The good people at Rossvegas Boardshop lent us their bungee rope for the day to do some tow in lines on the wall ride.
Here's the crew, helping FL's Director of Casual Living, Cam Turnbull, get a sweet ride!

It takes a little bit of muscle . . .

. . . to get just enough speed!

Jess throws down a smooth ol' tire butter in the Frozen Laundry Skintrack Softie.
These beauties will be up for sale on December 16th, can't wait!

Super steezy tailfish Turnbull rocking the High Spirits merino top!

Jess with a beauty indy grab off the jump line.

The crew out showing some love for Mr. Tow-in Turnbull.
This classy line brought to you by the creative direction of one Rory Belter!

We stayed all day, until the sun fell, getting as many leg burning laps and gut busting laughs as we could.
Jess rocked the day for us and we couldn't be more stoked to have her on board as a team rider in her awesome new base layers!
Thanks to everyone that came out to ride, watch and support us!
We can't wait to do it all over again soon.
Let it snow!
